The little me spilled food on the floor;
In spite of warnings before.
Mother was very angry;
For my act of disobedience.
I solved my math differently;
The teacher had her way.
Caning on my hand followed;
For my act of disobedience.
I wore my dress with freedom;
Frowns and stares ensued.
I received stinging rebukes;
For my act of disobedience.
I took my tuitions happily
Until the master scolded me;
For not spreading my legs wide.
Again, an act of disobedience.
I did my numbers impeccably;
The boss was not happy at all
Because I did not fudge them.
An act of disobedience, again.
Days after my marriage
Came the wrath of my in-laws;
The dowry wasn’t followed up.
Sigh, an act of disobedience.
It has its sturdy hold on me;
Right or wrong it doesn’t see.
Throughout life it follows me,
I’m disobedient – cast in stone.
I’m taking part in the Write Tribe ProBlogger Challenge. The prompt for today, Day 5, is ‘Disobedience’.
You paint stark, vivid images with your words.

This pains me to read, really. Harsh reality penned through a beautiful poem, Sree. Sigh!

A shrill passed through me reading this verse. I got goosebumps. Such is reality for many women. Sad.

Superb! The story of women through the ages. It never really changes, does it?

Yeah, the ground reality never seems to change even after years. Really hope it changes. Thank you, Apeksha.

People expect us to toe the line. If not, they try to take us down to their level and beat us arguing. Sad that many have to face this “rebuke”,

The arguing part is what I hate the most. Sometimes their logic is so flawed that you wonder who is doing the right thing. Indeed, it’s a sad state of affairs.

Thought provoking poem, Sreedeep. Doesn’t matter where you are or what your age is, a girl/woman is always expected to obey. You have expressed the sad state in profound words.

That’s a sorry state of affairs, Vinitha. Women have been ‘defined’ for too long. I hope things change for the better. Thank you for your kind words!

These words speak volumes about how we are all fitted into a mould to be cast perfect- any little deviation and we are branded disobedient- our fault or not!!

Sadly, yes. We as a human race need to broaden our minds. Otherwise every other thing we do will be branded as disobedience!

Being disobedient to stick to what we feel is right is correct I feel. Be disobedient Sree. One query, is this written as a female or male?

Thanks, Lata. I wrote this as a female but could equally apply to males.

It is indeed a harsh reality we live in! It took me on a emotional roller coaster for a while as i have been through one such horror at a tender age. But keeping that aside it was indeed beautifully written with a lot of depth in your thoughts displaying in this poem!

Sorry that this took you to an unwanted memory. I wrote this because today we are just not free to live the way we want to. There are umpteen fingers pointing at us and saying “You are disobedient”. Thank you for your kind words! Take care!

I just could not restrain myself from sharing it in my blog in wordpress. Very well pointed out, the act of disobedience can be varied meaning according to the situation.

Please feel free to share, Swati. The moment we refuse to toe a particular line, we are branded disobedient among other things. Indeed, there can be varied meanings.
