The small pool of water formed by the overnight rain teased Callie incessantly. She could not take her eyes off it and noticed that her reflection on it was different from what she saw in the mirror.
A light wind puffed across her face and sent a ripple through the water. She saw herself in a new light in the stirring pool.
“What is my true face? The constant one I see in the mirror everyday or the image in the intact pool of water or the rippling one?” she wondered aloud.
She realized that the face in the mirror was of her when she was 18 and had no care in the world. The first echo she saw in the puddle was of her 5 years later, a changed woman but with a blurred outlook. The face which she saw when the wind wafted was the Callie of the present day, all wobbly and uncertain as to what her path was.
Callie looked at the puddle of water again. The wind had managed to clear it a little and she could see herself more plainly. She smiled and her heart took on a million wings as she saw herself smiling. There is hope – that’s what this face means, she thought to herself.
She looked around, picked up a stone and tossed it into the pool. Soon after, excitedly, Callie jumped into the puddle!
