#366days366posts – Day 32 – The power of simple lyrics

When the Beatles had their first hit in the US about 50 years back, it was the start of a deluge of British influence on the American music industry. The song that catapulted them to fame was the iconic ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ which was released in mid-January 1964 and coveted the top position a couple of weeks later.

In this piece, I’m going to dwell on the simple, yet powerful lyrics of the song. The lyrics were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and is a reminder of how simple lyrics can evoke strong emotions. You can read the lyrics at:

The build up of passion in the lines is perfect. The subtle turn from ‘Oh yeah I’ll tell you……..’ and ‘Oh please say……..’ to ‘Yeah, you got……….’ and ‘Yeah you, got…….’ is not just clever but transforms the love into a very different, higher realm. The reverberation of ‘I wanna hold your hand’ is a manifestation of that love several times. There is nothing like holding the hand of the person you love. The energy that flows makes you immensely happy and like the lyrics say, it’s a feeling that you can’t hide. Isn’t that absolutely spot on?

The song just goes to prove that lyrics doesn’t have to be about flashy words. With simple words, one can weave magic, which makes the listener absolutely spell-bound. I’ve listened to songs which have much complex words but the feeling isn’t as great as this one. This has to rank as one of the best lyrics ever composed, in my opinion!
