It’s quite sad that daily we read about terror attacks in one form or the other. Whether the act is committed by local militants or the well known big-shots, terror is after all terror. Innocent people see their lives disappear or turn for the worse. Dreams are shattered, love is snatched and life is not the same anymore. For the victims, they will always feel the vicious hands of terror lurking everywhere. It’s terribly sad!
I was looking at the terror episodes that happened in 2015 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents,_January%E2%80%93June_2015 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents,_July%E2%80%93December_2015) and this table says a lot:
386 incidents in 12 months spanning 41 countries/places! That’s an average of 32 incidents per month or more than 1 incident per day! No wonder then that terror is at the top of the daily news!
The following countries have been victimized only once during 2015 – Australia, Bahrain, China, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Palestine, Kuwait, Russia, South Korea and the United Kingdom. The remaining 29 countries/places bore the brunt of the onslaught multiple times.
It’s also interesting to note that more than half the incidents took place during the second half of the year – 63%. The perpetrators were at their worst behavior during the last three months of 2015 as 40% of the total incidents in 2015 happened between Oct- Dec 2015.
Africa was the most frequently terrorized followed by Asia and the Middle East. This bit of information goes to show that the third world is under siege. Some food for thought for third world leaders?
The table below shows the terrorists’ footprints in 2015:
Africa’s vulnerability is very worrying. They have been brutally attacked both from within and outside. I get the feeling that the situation will exacerbate in the region this year. While in Asia and Europe, there are pockets where the militants are interested in, Africa has been an all-round fertile ground for malevolent strikes.
I think the numbers are there for all to see. There must be a definite pattern to the way the attacks are shaping up and many of the perpetrators may be in cahoots. Finding that might be key – the people who need to should open their eyes towards this and then we may be able to do something about wiping this canker off the face of our planet!
